2023 Martin Luther King, Jr Leadership Award Winner – Bernard Harrigan

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear bowties 🎀

A massive congratulations is in store for Bernard Harrigan! Awarded by Palm Beach State College, Bernard received the 2023 MLK Jr. Leadership Award after a nomination from his long time mentor Professor Erin Sullivan. Here’s what Harrigan had to say about his journey:

I am committed to in the field of Environmental Justice and Social Change, this also has become my major through the WHC’s individualized concentration opportunity. I will be the first from FAU to receive this degree focused on environmental policy and how we can engage our BIPOC communities to not only be part of the informed conversation, but also equitable decision makers. Two years ago, I went to Washington D.C. for the first time and was humbled by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial there. Having now gone back to Washington D.C. as part of the FAU’s winning National Model United Nations last year, the lines continue to blur between The Dream MLK Jr. spoke of and the reality that will be afforded to my two year old son. I believe that our next generation WILL see a new reality of equality, especially in the realm of climate change, environmental issues, and Florida’s commitment to sustaining our native ecosystems. This summer, I was selected as FAU’s first Udall Scholar, and the only representative of Florida. I am honored by this award, and will continue my humble journey as so many before me have walked with civility, integrity, and consensus.

We’re so happy to have Bernard here on campus and wish him all the best as he continues to shine bright for the world!
